چکیده

18 Many dryland areas are being converted into intensively managed irrigation crops, what 19 can disrupt the hydrological regime, degrade soil and water quality, enhance siltation, 20 erosion and bank instability, and affect biological communities. Still, the impacts of 21 irrigation schemes on the functioning of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems are poorly 22 understood. Here we assess the effects of irrigation agriculture on breakdown of coarse 23 organic matter in soil and water. We measured breakdown rates of alder and holm oak 24 leaves, and of poplar sticks in terrestrial and aquatic sites following a gradient of 25 increasing irrigation agriculture in a semi-arid Mediterranean basin transformed into 26 irrigation agriculture in 50% of its surface. Spatial patterns of stick breakdown 27 *Revised Manuscript Click here to view linked References

Carbon in catchments: connecting terrestrial carbon losses with aquatic metabolism

For a majority of aquatic ecosystems, respiration ( R ) exceeds autochthonous gross primary production (GPP). These systems have negative net ecosystem production ([NEP] = [GPP] – R ) and ratios of [GPP]/ R of <1. This net heterotrophy can be sustained only if aquatic respiration is subsidized by organic inputs from the catchment. Such subsidies imply that organic materials that escaped decompo...

Terrestrial dominance of organic matter in north temperate lakes

[1] Aquatic ecosystems are hotspots of decomposition and sources of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere that are globally significant. Carbon exported from land (allochthonous) also supplements the carbon fixed by photosynthesis in aquatic ecosystems (autochthonous), contributing to the organic matter (OM) that supports aquatic consumers. Although the presence of terrestrial compounds in aquatic O...

Statistical and Geostatistical Appraisal of Spatial Variability of Aggregate Stability and Aggregate-Associated Organic Carbon Content on a Catchment Scale in a Semi-arid Region, Central Iran

In a semiarid region of central Iran, effects of parent materials, physiography and landscape position, land use, andmanagement practices on association of organic carbon with secondary (aggregates) particles and aggregate stability canhave important consequences in terms of carbon sequestration and budgeting, deciding on the proper land use strategy andsuitable soil conservation practices. It ...

Carbon sequestration opportunities in organic agriculture

At the present time, soil carbon sequestration is of paramount importance to address the imminent threat of increased atmospheric carbon dioxide, which is looming large on the very survival and existence of the biome. The quantum of all carbon everywhere in the globe is same and fixed. It exists to the tune of 800 Pg in the atmosphere, 1700 Pg in terrestrial and 38000 Pg in aquatic ecosystem. E...

Water-saving irrigation strategies affect tuber water relations and nitrogen content of potatoes

The dynamic and static deficit (DDI, SDI), partial root drying (DPRD, SPRD) and full (FI)irrigation strategies were applied in Agria and Ramos potato cultivars in a semi-arid area. FIreceived 100% of the potential evapotranspiration (ET); SDI and SPRD received 75% of ETduring the growth period; DDI and DPRD received 90% of ET in the first third, 75% of ET inthe second third and 50% of ET in the...
